Floreana Island (Isla Floreana) is one of the inhabited islands of Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago, known for a mix of historical sites and wildlife features. The island has a small permanent population and is a regular stop on Galápagos cruise itineraries.

Key attractions include a historic barrel-based Post Office Bay, used since the age of sail for informal mail exchange, and Punta Cormorant with its shallow lagoon and olivine (green) sand where shorebirds such as flamingos congregate. The island also provides snorkeling and diving opportunities around its shorelines.

European and whaler visits in the 18th and 19th centuries left a marked human history on Floreana, and the island later hosted small colonist communities. Several notable episodes from the 20th century drew attention to the island’s human settlements.

Floreana sits in the southeastern sector of the Galápagos archipelago in the Pacific Ocean and is administered as part of Ecuador’s Galápagos Province. Access is normally by boat from larger islands as part of organized tours.

  • Status and visitation: Part of Ecuador's Galápagos Islands, the island is inhabited on a small scale and is visited for wildlife viewing and historical sites on regulated tourist itineraries.
