Flinders Island

Flinders Island is the largest island in the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait, part of Tasmania, Australia, and known for its remote, sparsely populated landscape and prominent granite peaks. It is a mix of agricultural land, native vegetation and coastal environments that supports small communities.

Outdoor activities include walking, birdwatching and coastal access; the island’s highest point, Mount Strzelecki (756 m), is a notable landmark with established walking routes. The main settlement, Whitemark, provides local services, accommodation and the island’s ferry and air connections.

European sealing and pastoral activity began in the 19th century and shaped settlement patterns; land use today combines agriculture, conservation reserves and tourism. Aboriginal connections to the island predate European contact and remain part of local cultural knowledge.

Geographically the island sits in Bass Strait to the northeast of Tasmania’s mainland and is accessed by regular flights and seasonal ferries from mainland ports and Tasmania.
