Flamengo Park

Flamengo Park (Parque do Flamengo or Aterro do Flamengo) is a large urban park on the northern shore of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. The area was created on reclaimed land and was developed in the mid-20th century as a continuous public waterfront.

The park contains long promenades, sports courts, open lawns, formal gardens and waterfront paths used for cycling and running. It hosts cultural facilities and green spaces along several kilometers of bay frontage, and includes the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM) and a prominent war memorial within its footprint.

The site grew from a planned reclamation and landscaping program in the mid-1900s, with major planting and garden work carried out during that period. Development preserved a broad waterfront strip for public use rather than private construction.

Flamengo Park sits in the Flamengo neighborhood between downtown Rio de Janeiro and the Copacabana district, directly facing Guanabara Bay. The park is adjacent to major city boulevards and is easily accessible from central Rio.

• Active recreation: Offers long waterfront promenades and continuous bike and pedestrian paths that run along Guanabara Bay, making it a primary route for runners and cyclists in the city.
• Viewpoints: Good viewpoints for city and bay views include the park's bay-side promenade facing Sugarloaf Mountain and the elevated lawns closest to the museum buildings.

What to See #

• Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM): Modern and contemporary exhibitions housed at a low-slung glass-and-concrete building on the park's bay edge; the museum fronts the promenade and hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
• Monument to the Dead of World War II: Bronze and stone memorial complex located within the park commemorating Brazilian service members from World War II; sits near the waterfront and is visible from the promenade.
