Fitzroy Island (Queensland)

Fitzroy Island is a continental island in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, about 29 km southeast of Cairns. It lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and combines a rainforest interior with fringing coral reef.

The island’s main visitor attractions are its white-sand Nudey Beach, close shore snorkeling on fringing reef, and short walking tracks that climb to hilltop lookouts. A small resort, campground and day‑visitor facilities support tourism, and ferries and seaplanes operate from Cairns.

The island is a vegetated continental island rather than a low coral cay, with rainforest cover inland and rocky headlands. Marine protection and park management govern diving, fishing and visitor access around the reefs.

Fitzroy sits off the tropical Queensland coast within sight of the mainland; transfers are commonly made from Cairns with journey times varying by vessel type.
