Fiji Museum

The Fiji Museum is the national museum of Fiji, located within Thurston Gardens in central Suva. It holds archaeological, ethnographic and historical collections documenting Fiji’s prehistoric settlement, traditional cultures and colonial-era history.

Galleries present material from Fiji’s prehistoric and historic past, including pottery, tools and objects of everyday and ritual use, and interpretive displays on the islands’ cultural heritage. The museum also manages archival material and artefacts used for research and education.

The museum was established in the early 20th century and has developed collections through archaeological fieldwork and donations; it serves as a centre for Fijian heritage presentation and research. Over time the museum has participated in conservation, exhibitions and public programmes for schools and visitors.

It occupies a purpose-built museum building set within Thurston Gardens in Suva’s central civic area, close to other government and cultural institutions and easily reached on foot from the city centre.
