Fertő-Hanság National Park
National Park Cross-border national park protecting Lake Fertő wetlands
Along Hungary’s Austria border, Fertő-Hanság National Park protects the shallow Lake Fertő/Neusiedlersee, reedbeds and alkali grasslands; birdwatching, cycling and winery visits in the Sopron region are common.
Fertő-Hanság National Park is a protected area in northwestern Hungary that conserves the western part of Lake Fertő (Neusiedler See) and the adjoining Hanság marshlands. The park protects a mix of shallow lake, reedbed and wetland habitats that are important for biodiversity and traditional land use.
The landscape includes extensive reedbeds, seasonal marshes and open water fringes that support large numbers of migratory and breeding waterfowl. The area is managed for conservation and low-intensity tourism, with trails, observation hides and educational facilities for visitors.
The park is part of the wider cross-border Fertő/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape and was included in international heritage discussions; it preserves both natural and cultural features of the lake and surrounding lowlands. The protected area lies along Hungary’s border with Austria in Győr-Moson-Sopron County near the town of Sopron and adjacent to communities on both sides of the frontier.
- UNESCO Cultural Landscape: The park protects the Hungarian portion of Lake Fertő and adjoining Hanság wetlands and forms part of the cross-border Fertő/Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape UNESCO listing.
- Birdlife and habitat importance: Noted for shallow steppe-lake habitat, extensive reedbeds and important migratory bird populations, making it a prime location for birdwatching.
