Fernandina Island is the westernmost island of Ecuador’s Galápagos archipelago and is among the youngest and most volcanically active islands in the group. The island is uninhabited by people and forms part of Galápagos National Park.

The island is dominated by the active shield volcano La Cumbre and extensive recent lava fields. Because of its isolation and fresh lava surfaces, Fernandina supports dense colonies of marine iguanas and is one of the few places where the flightless cormorant is still commonly seen.

Access for visitors is limited and controlled by the park authority; boat-based excursions normally land at a single approved site on the north coast from which short walks between lava flows allow wildlife viewing.

Fernandina lies immediately west of Isabela Island in the western Galápagos and is separated from it by a narrow sea channel.

  • Status and protection: Fernandina is the westernmost and one of the youngest islands in the Galápagos; it is uninhabited by people and protected as part of Galápagos National Park.
  • Wildlife: The island is home to large colonies of marine iguanas and the flightless cormorant, making it one of the archipelago's notable wildlife locations for guided visits.

What to See #

  • La Cumbre volcano: La Cumbre is the active shield volcano forming the island's spine and last erupted in recent decades; the volcanic landscape dominates much of the island's surface.
  • Punta Espinoza landing site: A north-coast landing site where visitors observe large colonies of marine iguanas, flightless cormorants and other wildlife among recent lava flows.
