Fénis Castle is a medieval stronghold in Italy’s Aosta Valley, renowned for its well-preserved defensive walls, towers and inner courtyard. It is one of the best-known examples of a fortified noble residence in the region, with intact exterior battlements and decorated interior rooms.
Architectural highlights include the compact plan with an inner courtyard surrounded by galleries and residential ranges, frescoed interiors and multiple towers and walkways that illustrate late medieval domestic fortification. The castle served as the residence of the Challant family, who were prominent in the Aosta Valley.
Fénis dates from the medieval period and achieved much of its present appearance during building campaigns in the late Middle Ages; it has been preserved and opened to the public as a historic site and museum.
