The precinct houses the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), galleries, cultural organisations and a visitor centre, alongside restaurants and event spaces. The open plaza features a prominent outdoor LED screen and is used regularly for festivals, live broadcasts and community events.

Developed as a major civic project on a former transport and industrial site beside the Yarra River, the square opened to the public in 2002 and has hosted national celebrations, cultural festivals and civic gatherings since then.
