Favignana
Island Sicilian island in Egadi archipelago, famed for tuna
The largest Aegadian island off Trapani, Favignana is known for small coves, cave boat tours and a tuna-fishing heritage; visitors cycle the flat roads and eat seafood at seaside trattorie.
Favignana is the largest island of the Aegadian archipelago off western Sicily, known for its coastal coves, clear Mediterranean waters and historic tuna-fishing industry. The island’s economy and heritage were long shaped by the tonnara (tuna fishery) and related processing facilities.
Visitors go to swim and snorkel in coves such as Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra, to explore the main town and the tonnara site, and to cycle the network of coastal roads; the island area is under 20 square kilometres and is easily traversable in a day. Boat trips around the archipelago and short ferries from Trapani are common; regular passenger services connect Favignana with the Sicilian mainland.
Human settlement on the island dates back to antiquity and the modern economy expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries with industrial-scale tuna processing. In recent decades tourism and preservation of maritime heritage have become important for the local economy.
Geographically the island lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Sicily’s west coast, a short ferry ride from the port of Trapani and surrounded by other Aegadian isles.
- Ferry access: Frequent ferries connect the island with Trapani on the Sicilian mainland; travel time is around 30 to 60 minutes depending on the service.
- Getting around: The island is small and easily explored by bike or scooter; several coastal coves such as Cala Rossa and Lido Burrone are the principal swimming spots.
What to See #
- Favignana town: The island's main town and port, serving as the transport hub for ferries to Trapani and the centre for local shops, accommodation and tuna-processing heritage sites.
- Cala Rossa: A dramatic coastal inlet known for its bright blue water and rocky cliffs; a short walk from the town and one of the island's most photographed spots.
- Tonnara (tuna fishery): The historic tuna-fishing facility and associated industrial complex that shaped the island's economy in the 19th and 20th centuries and is now partially preserved as an industrial heritage site.
How to Get to Favignana #
Favignana is reached by ferry or hydrofoil from the port of Trapani (Porto di Trapani). Fast hydrofoils take about 25-35 minutes; conventional ferries take longer. From Palermo drive west about 100-115 km via the A29 motorway to Trapani (roughly 1.5 hours by car) and board the ferry there. The ferry terminal on Favignana is in the main town; the quay is a short walk into town (typically 5-15 minutes).
(When coming from elsewhere in western Sicily you can also reach Trapani by regional train or intercity bus and transfer to the ferries.)
Tips for Visiting Favignana #
- Take the hydrofoil or regular ferry from Trapani and plan to arrive in the town's main harbor early in the morning - that lets you secure bike or e‑bike rentals before peak demand and reach popular coves like Cala Rossa before day‑trippers arrive.
- Explore the island by bicycle or scooter rather than trying to see everything on foot; the west coast cliffs and small beaches are spread out and many quieter viewpoints are reached via minor roads away from the main town.
- Book any boat tours in advance during July-August and ask operators to include the sea caves and southern coves; public ferry schedules are much busier in high season, so a booked tour avoids waiting for later departures.
Best Time to Visit Favignana #
