Farfa Abbey (Abbazia di Farfa) is in the comune of Fara in Sabina, north of Rome. By car it’s the most convenient option from Rome - the drive is roughly 40-60 km (about 45-75 minutes) via the A1 and regional roads into Sabina; follow signs to Fara in Sabina/Farfa. You can also take regional trains toward Fara Sabina-Montelibreti (the FL1/FL2 regional services serve that station) and then a short taxi or local-bus ride the last few kilometres to the abbey.
Tips for Visiting Farfa Abbey #
- Check the abbey's opening hours and schedule in advance - Farfa is an active monastic site and parts of the church or cloister can be closed during services or private events.
- Visit earlier in the day on weekdays to avoid weekend visitor groups and to enjoy the views from the abbey hill over the Tiber valley and surrounding Sabina countryside.
- Take time to walk the immediate village lanes around the abbey rather than just viewing the façade; the cloister and quieter exterior viewpoints are easy to miss if you stay only by the entrance.
