Family Islands National Park
Park Island national park with beaches and tropical rainforest
Off Queensland’s Cassowary Coast, Family Islands National Park protects rainforest islands like Dunk Island; visitors camp, snorkel fringing reefs and follow coastal walking tracks.
Family Islands National Park is a protected group of continental islands off the Cassowary Coast in far north Queensland. The park conserves island rainforest, coastal habitats and reef-fringe environments and is a popular destination for nature tourism.
The archipelago’s islands range from small rocky islets to larger, vegetated islands; the largest and best-known is Dunk Island, which has beaches, walking trails and offshore reef for snorkeling. Visitors typically come for snorkeling, birdwatching and short guided walks rather than extensive facilities.
The islands have long been part of Aboriginal country and later became focus points for tourism and limited holiday accommodation; protection as a national park formalised management for conservation and visitor use. Over time some islands have seen commercial accommodation while others remain undeveloped.
The park lies off the mid-Queensland coast near Mission Beach, between the larger centres of Cairns and Townsville, and is accessed by boat from Mission Beach and nearby coastal communities.
- Access: Day-trip boat services and charter vessels operate from Mission Beach, which is the most common departure point for visiting the islands.
- Natural features: Islands are granite continental islands with remnant rainforest and fringing coral reef, offering snorkeling, birdwatching and short walks rather than large developed facilities.
What to See #
- Dunk Island: The largest and best-known island in the group, featuring rainforest-covered slopes and sandy beaches and acting as a focal point for day trips and wildlife viewing.
- Other Family Islands: A set of smaller continental islands and rocky islets that together form the protected national park, hosting coastal rainforest, seabird colonies and fringing reef systems.
How to Get to Family Islands National Park #
The Family Islands are reached by ferry from coastal towns such as Cairns or Innisfail, depending on which island is the destination. Private boat operators and small ferries serve the better-known islands; some islands also have small airstrips for charter flights. Check Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and local operators for current schedules and permits.
Tips for Visiting Family Islands National Park #
- Book inter-island ferries and campsites well in advance during the dry season; services are limited and fill quickly.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a snorkel; the Great Barrier Reef border and fringing coral are major attractions.
- If aiming to see the iconic Flying Foxes (fruit bats), arrive at twilight when they leave the trees in huge numbers.
Best Time to Visit Family Islands National Park #
The park is best visited in the dry season for reliable weather and boat connections; wet season can be quieter but more unpredictable.
