Externsteine

Externsteine is a striking natural sandstone rock formation in the Teutoburg Forest of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, noted for its tall, vertical pillars and historic rock carvings. The formation has been a cultural landmark for centuries and combines natural geology with visible human modification.

A notable feature is a medieval carved relief on one face of the rocks and a series of steps and small chambers cut into the stone, plus a viewpoint that overlooks the forest. The site is compact - the cluster of pillars and paths can be explored on foot within a short visit.

Archaeological and historical evidence indicate usage of the site in prehistory and later adaptation in the Middle Ages for religious purposes; the carved relief and small chapel-like spaces date to medieval Christian activity at the rocks. The area around the pillars has been managed for conservation and visitors since the 19th century.

Externsteine sits near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Teutoburg Forest region; it is reached by local roads and forest trails and lies within a mixed woodland landscape.

• Access: Access is via marked woodland trails and a short set of carved steps and paths; wear sturdy footwear as surfaces can be uneven and slippery after rain.
