Euromast
Building Tall observation tower offering city views in Rotterdam
From Rotterdam’s Euromast visitors ride to an observation platform 100+ metres above the Maas for panoramic city and harbour views; a rotating restaurant and occasional abseil events make it a practical stop on port and architecture tours.
The Euromast is a 20th-century observation tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands, built as a city landmark and viewing structure. It was constructed for visitors to view the city and port and has become an easily recognisable part of Rotterdam’s skyline.
The structure provides observation decks and a restaurant that offer panoramic views across the city and the Nieuwe Maas river; visitor facilities include indoor and outdoor vantage points and a small event space. A later vertical extension increased the tower’s overall height to allow broader vistas over Rotterdam.
The tower opened in the early 1960s and was subsequently extended in the 1970s to raise its viewing platform and skyline presence. It has since been maintained as a public attraction and occasional venue for special events.
Euromast stands in the Parkhaven area of Rotterdam near the city centre and the riverfront, within walking distance of central Rotterdam’s transport connections.
- Construction and height changes: Originally completed in 1960 at about 101 metres, the tower's height was increased by an 85-metre extension in 1970 to reach approximately 185 metres, making it Rotterdam's tallest building.
- Viewing and events: The tower includes public viewing platforms and a restaurant, providing panoramic views over Rotterdam and the Nieuwe Maas river; it is a focal point for city panoramas and events.
What to See #
- Observation platforms and restaurant: Observation platforms and a restaurant are located in the tower's visitor sections, with a viewing height around 100 metres in the original structure and higher from the later extension.
How to Get to Euromast #
The Euromast stands in Het Park beside Parklaan/Parkhaven in Rotterdam. It is walkable from Rotterdam Centraal in about 20-25 minutes (roughly 2-3 km) or reachable by local RET trams/buses that stop near the park - get off at the park/Euromast stops and expect a 5-10 minute walk to the tower. By car the Euromast is only a few kilometres from central Rotterdam (around a 10-15 minute drive); from The Hague it is roughly a 25-30 km drive via the A13/A20 motorways.
Tips for Visiting Euromast #
- Buy a timed-entry ticket online to skip the ticket queue and guarantee elevator access at your chosen time-weekdays early morning typically have the fewest visitors.
- If you want both views and a meal, reserve a table at the Euromast restaurant in advance; dining slots fill quickly for sunset service.
- Combine a Euromast visit with a short walk through the adjoining Het Park for quieter photo angles of the tower and to avoid the busiest entrances at the base.
