Main image

Eucla National Park is a coastal protected area on the border between Western Australia and South Australia, protecting dune systems and limestone cliffs along the Great Australian Bight. The park lies adjacent to the small settlement of Eucla and is noted for its remote coastal landscapes.

The park’s coastline includes broad sand dunes, low-vegetation plains and exposed limestone cliffs. Short walks and informal sightseeing stops along the roadside are the main visitor activities; there are no large developed recreational facilities inside the park.

The area contains the partly buried ruins of the 19th-century Eucla Telegraph Station and other historic remains that have been affected by shifting sands. Over time mobile dunes have altered and in places covered former buildings and tracks.

Geographically the park sits on the eastern edge of the Nullarbor Plain, immediately north of the Eyre Highway at the Western Australia-South Australia border. The landscape is flat inland and drops to coastal cliffs where the plain meets the sea.

  • Access and facilities: Road access is via the Eyre Highway; facilities are very limited and services in the park are minimal, so carry fuel and supplies.
  • Best viewpoints: Cliff-top viewpoints along the coastal margin provide the clearest views of the Great Australian Bight and the park's dune systems, best visited in calm weather.

  • Sand dunes and coastal cliffs: Stretch of coastal sand dunes and limestone cliffs along the Great Australian Bight that front the Nullarbor Plain and mainland coastline.
  • Beaches and lookouts: Sheltered beaches and dune systems used for short walks and wildlife viewing; informal viewpoints along the Eyre Highway give access to cliff-top panoramas.
