Euboea
Island Greece's second-largest island with varied coastline and mountains
Euboea, the long Greek island east of the mainland, draws visitors for beaches and thermal springs, mountain villages, scenic coastal drives and archaeological sites reachable by short crossings.
Euboea (also called Evia) is Greece’s second-largest island, running parallel to the eastern Greek mainland and historically important from antiquity through modern times.
Inhabited since prehistoric and classical periods, Euboea played roles in ancient Greek commerce, colonisation and military activity; the island’s towns contain archaeological remains from the Archaic and Classical eras. Over centuries it has been part of Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman spheres before becoming part of modern Greece.
Lying off the eastern coast of mainland Greece, Euboea runs roughly north-south parallel to the mainland and is connected to it in several places by bridges, making it readily accessible from nearby mainland cities.
- Size and connections: The island is the second-largest in Greece and is separated from the mainland by narrow straits that are crossed by road bridges at major towns.
- Thermal springs: Thermal springs at locations such as Edipsos have been used since antiquity and remain a local attraction for spa visitors.
