Eszterháza

Eszterháza is an 18th-century palace complex in Fertőd, northwestern Hungary, constructed as the principal residence of the Esterházy princely family. It is one of Hungary’s major aristocratic palaces and a notable example of Baroque and early Neoclassical court architecture.

The palace complex includes richly decorated state rooms, a purpose-built court theatre and extensive gardens. The theatre on the site was the workplace of the composer Joseph Haydn, who served the Esterházys and premiered works there.

Built and expanded during the mid-1700s under Esterházy patronage, the estate functioned as a family court and cultural centre for several decades. The building and grounds retain many original design elements and are managed today as a heritage site and museum.

Eszterháza lies in Fertőd in Győr-Moson-Sopron County close to the Austrian border in northwestern Hungary; the estate is set within landscaped parkland outside the small town.
