Espiritu Santo

Espiritu Santo (often called Santo) is the largest island in the Vanuatu archipelago, located in the country’s northern island group and dominated by rugged interior highlands and coastal plains. The island combines agriculture, forested mountains and popular beach and dive sites along its shores.

Key visitor draws include the town of Luganville with its wartime heritage, white-sand beaches such as Champagne Beach, freshwater blue holes and extensive coral reefs. The island also hosts World War II relics and shipwrecks that attract recreational divers.

During World War II Espiritu Santo served as an important Allied base and harbor, leaving behind infrastructure and wrecks that remain visible today. The island has since developed tourism around its natural sites and wartime history while maintaining agricultural and village livelihoods.

Geographically it lies in the northern Vanuatu island group, with Luganville on the southeast coast serving as the principal town and transport hub.
