Main image

Espiritu Santo (often called Santo) is the largest island in the Vanuatu archipelago, located in the country’s northern island group and dominated by rugged interior highlands and coastal plains. The island combines agriculture, forested mountains and popular beach and dive sites along its shores.

Key visitor draws include the town of Luganville with its wartime heritage, white-sand beaches such as Champagne Beach, freshwater blue holes and extensive coral reefs. The island also hosts World War II relics and shipwrecks that attract recreational divers.

During World War II Espiritu Santo served as an important Allied base and harbor, leaving behind infrastructure and wrecks that remain visible today. The island has since developed tourism around its natural sites and wartime history while maintaining agricultural and village livelihoods.

Geographically it lies in the northern Vanuatu island group, with Luganville on the southeast coast serving as the principal town and transport hub.

  • Size and high point: Espiritu Santo is Vanuatu's largest island by area and contains the country's tallest peak, Mount Tabwemasana (about 1,879 metres).
  • Diving highlight: The wartime wreck of the SS President Coolidge near Luganville is one of the South Pacific's most accessible large wreck dives and a major draw for divers.

What to See #

  • Luganville: Luganville - the largest town and administrative centre on the island, historically significant as a World War II logistics base.
  • Champagne Beach / Blue Lagoon areas: Champagne Beach and nearby lagoon spots known for white sand and snorkelling; a short drive from Luganville on the island's eastern coast.
  • SS President Coolidge wreck: The wreck of the SS President Coolidge - a World War II troopship sunk in the Segond Channel and now a major wreck-dive site.

  • Visit during the drier months (roughly May-October) for better boat and road access, especially if you plan diving or beach outings like Champagne Beach early in the morning to avoid day-trip crowds.
  • Base yourself in Luganville for most excursions-operators there run dives to the SS President Coolidge wreck and day trips to inland waterfalls and local village experiences.
  • If you scuba dive the President Coolidge or other wrecks, book with established Luganville dive operators who handle permits and logistics rather than attempting independent dive arrangements; bring local cash for remote services.
