Española Island

Española (also called Hood) is one of the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, internationally known for its endemic wildlife and as a primary breeding site for the waved albatross.

Key visitor sites include Punta Suárez, with coastal cliffs, blowholes and abundant seabirds, and Gardner Bay, a sandy beach with large sea‑lion colonies and good snorkeling off the shore. The island also hosts endemic species such as unique finches and a distinctive population of marine iguanas.

Geologically one of the older islands in the archipelago, Española’s isolation has produced several species found nowhere else. Visitor access is regulated by the Galápagos National Park and typically occurs as part of organised cruise or day‑boat itineraries with licensed guides.

The island lies in the southeastern sector of the Galápagos and is reached only by sea as part of regulated visitor routes originating from the main inhabited islands.
