Española (also called Hood) is one of the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador, internationally known for its endemic wildlife and as a primary breeding site for the waved albatross.

Key visitor sites include Punta Suárez, with coastal cliffs, blowholes and abundant seabirds, and Gardner Bay, a sandy beach with large sea‑lion colonies and good snorkeling off the shore. The island also hosts endemic species such as unique finches and a distinctive population of marine iguanas.

Geologically one of the older islands in the archipelago, Española’s isolation has produced several species found nowhere else. Visitor access is regulated by the Galápagos National Park and typically occurs as part of organised cruise or day‑boat itineraries with licensed guides.

The island lies in the southeastern sector of the Galápagos and is reached only by sea as part of regulated visitor routes originating from the main inhabited islands.

  • Access rules: Most visits are organised by the Galápagos National Park and visitor numbers and access are managed; travel normally requires a licensed guide and a boat itinerary.
  • Waved albatross breeding: The waved albatross breeds predominantly on this island; the peak of courtship and nesting activity is concentrated in the main breeding months (roughly spring through early winter in the Galápagos).

What to See #

  • Punta Suárez: Punta Suárez is a principal visitor landing on the island, featuring tidal blowholes, coastal cliffs, marine iguana colonies and nesting sites for seabirds.
  • Gardner Bay: Gardner Bay is a broad sandy bay known for large sea‑lion colonies and calm beaches that are a frequent visitor landing and wildlife‑watching spot.
