Eryx

Eryx is the ancient name for the fortified summit area on Monte Erice in western Sicily, now occupied by the medieval town of Erice near Trapani. The site is known in antiquity for a sanctuary of Aphrodite Erycina and for its long sequence of occupation from prehistory through the classical and medieval periods.

Today visitors encounter a medieval townscape with defensive walls, churches and narrow streets alongside archaeological remains on the summit linked to the ancient sanctuary. The location’s prominence made it a regional religious and strategic centre in antiquity and later history.

Archaeological and literary sources attest to the ancient sanctuary and later Roman and medieval activity at the site; continuous settlement and reuse of the summit developed through successive cultural phases. The mountaintop setting has also preserved visible features from multiple periods.

Monte Erice rises to about 751 metres and lies a short distance inland from the Gulf of Trapani in western Sicily, providing commanding views over the surrounding plains and sea.
