Errinundra National Park
National Park Remote Victorian park protecting cool temperate rainforest
Errinundra National Park in Victoria protects old-growth mountain ash and cool‑temperate rainforest; visitors come for remote walking tracks, birdwatching and subalpine scenery.
Errinundra National Park is a protected area in eastern Victoria that conserves cool temperate rainforest and high-altitude forests on the Errinundra Plateau. It is noted for its large old-growth trees and relatively intact native forest.
The park offers short walking tracks through rainforest gullies and across plateau woodlands, wildlife observation opportunities including forest birds and mammals, and remote backcountry settings rather than developed visitor facilities. Trails are generally short but can be steep and slippery in wet weather, and there are viewpoints over surrounding forested landscapes.
The area was set aside for conservation to protect remaining tracts of cool temperate rainforest and the Plateau’s distinctive ecosystems; management focuses on protecting old-growth stands and biodiversity values. Over time the park has been managed to reduce logging impacts and to maintain habitat for native species.
Errinundra sits in East Gippsland on the Errinundra Plateau in Victoria, Australia, within a remote, forested landscape. The nearest significant towns are in East Gippsland; access is via roads that cross forested highlands and can be affected by seasonal conditions.
- Ecology: Home to extensive old-growth cool temperate rainforest and large stands of ancient myrtles and tree ferns, offering one of the best examples of this ecosystem in Victoria.
- Visitor note: Access is by sealed and unsealed roads; many walking tracks are short but can be wet and muddy, so waterproof footwear is recommended.
