Main image

Đerdap National Park protects a substantial section of the Danube Gorge - commonly called the Iron Gates - on Serbia’s eastern border with Romania, conserving steep river canyons, cliffs and riparian habitats. The park combines natural scenery with significant archaeological and cultural sites.

Rugged gorge landscapes, river viewpoints and the prehistoric archaeological complex of Lepenski Vir, a major Mesolithic settlement noted for its sculpted stone figures and early riverine architecture. The park provides hiking, viewpoint access, river vistas and museum displays explaining local prehistory.

The area around the gorge underwent major changes in the 20th century with the construction of the Iron Gates hydroelectric works, but the park was established to conserve the remaining natural and cultural values and to manage visitor access.

Đerdap National Park lies along the middle Danube in eastern Serbia, centered on the steep gorge section that forms the border with Romania; the nearest Serbian towns with visitor services include Donji Milanovac and Tekija.

  • Lepenski Vir: Contains major archaeological remains including the Mesolithic/Neolithic site of Lepenski Vir, which dates to roughly 9,000-6,000 years ago and is renowned for its river‑front sculptures and settlement layout.
  • Danube Gorge: The park encompasses a long stretch of the Danube Gorge (the Iron Gates), offering dramatic cliff viewpoints and river landscapes formed where the river cuts through the Carpathian and Balkan massifs.

What to See #

  • Lepenski Vir: A riverside Mesolithic settlement with monumental stone sculptures and complex fishing‑oriented architecture dated to roughly 9,000-6,000 years before present, among the most important prehistoric sites in the Danube corridor.
