Đerdap National Park protects a substantial section of the Danube Gorge - commonly called the Iron Gates - on Serbia’s eastern border with Romania, conserving steep river canyons, cliffs and riparian habitats. The park combines natural scenery with significant archaeological and cultural sites.
Rugged gorge landscapes, river viewpoints and the prehistoric archaeological complex of Lepenski Vir, a major Mesolithic settlement noted for its sculpted stone figures and early riverine architecture. The park provides hiking, viewpoint access, river vistas and museum displays explaining local prehistory.
The area around the gorge underwent major changes in the 20th century with the construction of the Iron Gates hydroelectric works, but the park was established to conserve the remaining natural and cultural values and to manage visitor access.
Đerdap National Park lies along the middle Danube in eastern Serbia, centered on the steep gorge section that forms the border with Romania; the nearest Serbian towns with visitor services include Donji Milanovac and Tekija.

Đerdap National Park is accessible by road from Belgrade (roughly 2.5-3 hours east to the Golubac area) and by rail: trains stop at Donji Milanovac and Golubac. The E75/M21 follows the Serbian bank; ferries and tourist boats operate on the Danube seasonally.
Tips for Visiting Đerdap National Park #
- Visit the Lepenski Vir archaeological site in the morning when the light softens the Danube's cliffs and the small on-site museum is less crowded.
- Drive the road along the Serbian bank for views of the Iron Gates; stop at the Tabula Traiana inscription embedded in the cliff face.
- If staying overnight, use Donji Milanovac as a base-its waterfront has simple guesthouses and cafés.

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for walking and archaeological visits; summer is busiest on the river.
