Main image

The Episcopal City of Albi is a compact historic ensemble in southern France centred on the cathedral and the bishop’s palace, dating mainly from the late 13th to 15th centuries. The site is distinguished by extensive use of red brick and the scale of its episcopal architecture.

The dominant monument is the fortified Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, erected from the late 13th century and notable for its massive brick exterior and richly worked interior. Close by, the Palais de la Berbie, the medieval bishop’s palace, fronts the river and houses the city gallery with important collections of regional art.

The cathedral and episcopal palace were erected in the aftermath of the Albigensian Crusade as expressions of ecclesiastical and royal authority; construction and later modifications span from the late 13th century through the late medieval period. The church and palace together structured the city’s civic and religious life under episcopal rule.

Albi sits on a pronounced bend of the Tarn River in the Occitania region of southern France, roughly 80 km northeast of Toulouse, with the episcopal complex occupying a central, elevated position above the river.

  • Brick construction: The cathedral is built primarily of brick and is renowned for its monumental scale and fortified appearance, reflecting construction between the late 13th and 15th centuries.

Tips for Visiting Episcopal City of Albi #

  • Start your visit at Sainte‑Cécile Cathedral and, if you want panoramic views, reserve time to climb the cathedral tower early in the day-the tower is ticketed and can sell out during high season, while the morning light shows the brickwork best.
  • Cross the Pont Vieux and follow the riverside path to the Palais de la Berbie (Toulouse‑Lautrec Museum); the museum is adjacent to the cathedral and is often overlooked by visitors who only see the cathedral exterior, so allow time for both.
