The Elogio del Horizonte is a large abstract concrete sculpture by Basque artist Eduardo Chillida, located on Cerro de Santa Catalina in Gijón, Asturias.
The work forms a monumental, curved concrete opening that frames views across the Bay of Biscay and serves as a prominent hilltop viewpoint. The sculpture stands at roughly 10 metres high and is a frequent subject for photography and public visits.
Commissioned as a public artwork for the city of Gijón, the sculpture was completed and installed in 1990 and has since been an established landmark on the headland.
The piece sits on the summit area of Cerro de Santa Catalina overlooking the Bay of Biscay, within walking distance of Gijón’s seafront and the city center.

How to Get to Elogio del Horizonte #
From Gijón city centre, it’s a 10-15 minute walk west along Calle Ezcurdia and the seafront promenade to Cerro de Santa Catalina. The hill is also accessible by local buses (routes L1/L2 depending on schedule) that stop near Playa de San Lorenzo; from there it’s a 10-12 minute walk up to the site.
Tips for Visiting Elogio del Horizonte #
- Go at sunrise for the best light and almost nobody else - the concrete lets the first pale sun pour through the central aperture like a theatrical spotlight.
- Walk the rocky promenade west along Playa del Arbeyal after visiting; locals say the best pintxos are a five-minute walk from the hill.
- Look for the graffiti and rubbing marks on the low concrete ledge: lovers, climbers and skateboarders have all left small traces. Don't try to climb the inner curve - it's for sitting, not scaling.
