Elateia was an ancient town in central Greece that occupied a strategic position on the approaches to the Thessalian plain and the interior. It is recorded in classical sources as controlling a pass that was important for military movements.
In the classical period Elateia played a role in Greek interstate politics and warfare; it is notably recorded in connection with Philip II of Macedon’s campaign in Greece, when control of the town was a strategic objective in 339 BC. Occupation and fortunes shifted over successive centuries as regional powers changed.
The site sits in the upland interior of central Greece in the broader region administered today as Central Greece. Its remains lie within a mixed agricultural and hilly landscape that connects the coastal lowlands to inland plateaus.
