Elafonisi
Island Cretan beach island known for pink sand lagoon
On Crete’s southwest coast, Elafonisi pairs a pink-sand islet with shallow lagoons; tourists swim, snorkel and sunbathe, accessing the shore via a short sandbar.
Elafonisi is a coastal area on the southwestern tip of Crete in the Chania region, comprising a shallow lagoon and a small offshore islet connected by a sandbar at low tide. The site is well known for its pale pink sand, clear shallow water and sheltered swimming areas.
Visitors commonly wade across the sandbar to the islet, use the lagoon for swimming and snorkeling in calm conditions, and explore low dune vegetation and small coastal trails. The shallow water areas extend hundreds of metres offshore in places, creating expansive wading zones.
The site has been used for local fishing and coastal activities for centuries and is now managed with conservation measures to protect dune vegetation and nesting birds while accommodating high visitor numbers in peak season. Measures include protected zones and visitor guidance to limit erosion and habitat damage.
Elafonisi lies off Crete’s southwestern coast in the Chania regional unit, set on a low-lying coastal plain with sandy beaches and a sheltered Mediterranean lagoon. It is reached by road from towns across western Crete and is a popular day-trip destination.
- Pink sand and lagoon: The beach is famous for its pale pink-tinged sand, produced by crushed shells and coral fragments, and for very shallow, warm lagoon waters ideal for families and snorkelling.
What to See #
- Islet and sandbar: The small islet off the beach and the connecting sandbar create shallow lagoons popular for wading and swimming in calm water.
- Beach and lagoon habitats: The beach and lagoon areas are part of a protected coastal environment where low dunes and sparse vegetation harbour local and migratory bird species.
