El Leoncito National Park is a protected area in San Juan Province in western Argentina notable for its high-altitude, dry plateau landscapes and excellent astronomical observing conditions. The park is best known for the presence of observatory facilities and very dark night skies.
The park contains telescopes and an observatory complex that serve national and international astronomy programs, plus trails and viewpoints across open scrub and rocky outcrops. Daytime activities focus on short hikes and landscape viewing; nights are dominated by stargazing and observatory access.
The area was set aside for protection partly to preserve sky quality for astronomy, and facilities within the park have been developed to support scientific work and limited tourism. Vegetation is low Andean scrub and the terrain is largely open plateaus and ridgelines.
El Leoncito lies in the Andean foothills of San Juan Province, roughly 40-80 kilometres from nearby provincial towns such as Barreal and Valle Fértil depending on access route; observatory facilities sit at high elevations around the 2,000-2,700 metre range.
