El Hierro
Island Smallest Canary Island and UNESCO biosphere reserve
El Hierro, the smallest inhabited Canary Island, draws hikers and divers to basalt cliffs, volcanic trails and La Restinga marine reserve; visitors find scattered villages, wind- and wave-shaped coastlines, and locally produced goat cheeses and fresh fish.
El Hierro is the smallest and westernmost of the main Canary Islands, part of Spain’s Canary archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. It is volcanic in origin and has a long history of traditional farming, fishing and increasingly sustainable tourism.
Visitors explore rugged volcanic scenery, coastal cliffs and terraces, small villages and clear waters that make the island popular for diving, especially around La Restinga. The island has a network of hiking trails, viewpoints such as the Mirador de la Peña, and limited but distinctive cultural sites in the small capital, Valverde.
Formed by successive volcanic eruptions over geological time, El Hierro was settled historically by Guanche peoples and later by Spanish colonists. In modern times the island has been notable for small-scale agriculture and more recently for conservation and biosphere initiatives; the island experienced a notable submarine eruption and seismic crisis in 2011-2012.
El Hierro lies at the western end of the Canary Islands chain off the northwest coast of Africa, within the autonomous community of the Canary Islands. The island is served by a small airport and ferry connections to the other islands.
- Biosphere Reserve: Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its volcanic landscapes, endemic species and traditional land use patterns.
- Recent volcanic activity: Experienced an underwater volcanic eruption in 2011-2012 near the southern coast, leading to seismic activity and temporary impacts on local fisheries and dive tourism.
What to See #
- La Restinga and marine reserve: La Restinga and the surrounding marine area on the island's southern coast, known for clear waters, diving sites and a marine reserve established after recent volcanic activity.
- Punta de la Orchilla: Punta de la Orchilla, a historic western point of the Canaries long used as a cartographic prime meridian reference in early modern Europe.
- Mirador de la Peña: Mirador de la Peña, a roadside viewpoint and visitor platform remodelled by architect César Manrique offering panoramic views over terraced countryside and the sea.
How to Get to El Hierro #
El Hierro is served by El Hierro Airport (VDE) with inter-island flights from Tenerife and La Palma operated by local carriers (e.g., Binter Canarias). Ferries also run between Tenerife (Los Cristianos) and La Estaca on El Hierro - the crossing typically takes a few hours depending on the service and season.
On arrival by ferry you reach La Estaca; Valverde (the island capital) is inland a short drive from the port (roughly 10-15 km). Taxis and local buses connect the ferry terminal and airport with Valverde and other island towns.
Tips for Visiting El Hierro #
- Travel by the short flight into El Hierro (Valverde) or by ferry to La Estaca from Tenerife and plan your route clockwise on the main HI‑1 road to hit key viewpoints in comfortable driving legs.
- Visit in spring or autumn for milder winds and fewer visitors; if you want diving, book trips to La Restinga in advance since sea conditions and limited dive operators can restrict availability.
- Include Mirador de la Peña (César Manrique's viewpoint) and the volcanic coastal landscapes in your itinerary - these designed and natural viewpoints are easy to reach and often overlooked by day‑trippers who stick to the main towns.
