El Bierzo is a comarca (region) in the western part of the province of León in Castilla y León, Spain, centered on the town of Ponferrada. The valley region is mountainous and agriculturally productive, known for vineyards, chestnuts and historical mining landscapes.
The area’s vineyards produce wines under the Bierzo Denominación de Origen, with the red Mencía grape particularly associated with local producers. The terrain includes valleys framed by the Montes de León and other ranges, with a mix of cultivated land and forested slopes.
El Bierzo has a long human presence including Roman-period mining at Las Médulas, medieval pilgrimage connections along the Camino de Santiago and a network of historic towns and villages. The Roman gold-mining works at Las Médulas dramatically reshaped the landscape and are among the most visible archaeological remains in the region.
Geographically the comarca lies in western León province, bordering Galicia and near the Cantabrian mountain system; Ponferrada is the main urban centre and gateway to much of the region.
- Bierzo wine: The area is an established Denominación de Origen for wine, best known for red wines made from the Mencía grape.
- Las Médulas: Las Médulas, the Roman-era gold-mining landscape within the region, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a prominent visitor attraction.
