Ekain cave
Archaeological Site Paleolithic cave with well-preserved parietal paintings
Limestone cave in the Basque Country containing Paleolithic paintings; public access is restricted for conservation, but visitors see reproductions and exhibits at a nearby interpretation centre.
Ekain cave is a Paleolithic decorated cave in the Basque Country of northern Spain containing naturalistic polychrome paintings, especially of horses. The artwork dates to the Upper Paleolithic (Magdalenian) period and is considered an important example of European Ice Age cave art.
The cave’s main chamber contains large painted figures and compositions executed in charcoal and mineral pigments; researchers value the site for its preservation and stylistic links to other Magdalenian caves. Due to conservation concerns the original cave is closed to routine tourism.
Ekain was documented by archaeologists and speleologists in the 20th century and has been the subject of study for its imagery and archaeological deposits. To allow public appreciation without risking damage, a full‑scale replica, EkainBerri, was created in nearby Zestoa.
Geographically the cave lies in the Basque Country near the town of Deba/Zestoa on the northern Iberian coast and is accessed only by authorised researchers; public visitors are directed to the replica centre in Zestoa.
- Restricted access: The cave preserves Upper Paleolithic (Magdalenian) paintings, primarily naturalistic depictions of horses and other large mammals, and is closed to general public access to protect the art.
- Replica in Zestoa: Visitors can see a precise, life‑size replica at EkainBerri museum in Zestoa, opened to provide public access to the imagery without exposing the original cave to damage.
What to See #
- Main gallery: The main decorated chamber contains the majority of the large polychrome animal paintings, dominated by horses, executed in the Upper Paleolithic style.
- EkainBerri replica: A modern, full‑scale replica museum known as EkainBerri in Zestoa reproduces the cave's paintings and layout for public visits while preserving the original site.
