Eisriesenwelt
Amusement Park World's largest ice cave system near Werfen
Eisriesenwelt near Werfen is the world’s largest ice cave system; guided tours lead visitors through frozen chambers and vertical passages accessed by mountain trail and cable-car approaches.
Eisriesenwelt is an ice cave complex in the Tennengebirge near Werfen in Salzburg state and is commonly described as the world’s largest ice cave system.
The site’s visitor route passes a sequence of frozen chambers and dramatic ice formations reached by an uphill walk from the funicular/cable-car drop-off and a series of steps and platforms inside the cave. Temperatures inside the accessible chambers are below freezing year-round, so warm clothing is required during visits.
The cave system extends deep into the mountain with many kilometres of passages; guided tours cover the show cave sections and provide access to the principal ice chambers discovered in the late 19th century.
Eisriesenwelt sits on the slopes above the village of Werfen, in the Tennengebirge range of the Northern Limestone Alps, and is reached from Werfen by a short cable-car ride and walk.
- Scale: Recognised as the world's largest ice cave system, the cave passages extend roughly 42 kilometres into the Tennengebirge massif though only a limited portion is accessible on standard tours.
What to See #
- Ice Grotto: The principal Ice Grotto is the section with large frozen formations and ice sculptures that most guided tours reach; it is accessed on a marked visitor path with steps and platforms.
- Entrance and access: A cable car and a short uphill walk from the village of Werfen provide the standard visitor approach to the cave entrance and visitor centre facilities at the mouth of the system.
How to Get to Eisriesenwelt #
By train and bus: Eisriesenwelt (the ice caves) is reached from Salzburg by ÖBB regional trains to Werfen on the Salzburg-Villach line (Werfen station). From Werfen station take the local bus or a short taxi ride up the valley to the Eisriesenwelt visitor centre and cable car (local shuttle services operate seasonally).
From the visitor centre you take the cable car and then a steep, signposted uphill walk (stone steps and paths) of roughly 20-30 minutes to the cave entrance; allow additional time for the cable car and walking.
Tips for Visiting Eisriesenwelt #
- Book tickets for the earliest guided cave tour available and take the first cable car up from Werfen to avoid the mid‑day crowds that build at the entrance and on the stairs to the cave.
- Use the cable car from Werfen to shorten the approach: the walk from the valley is steep and most visitors rely on the Seilbahn to reach the cave area quickly and conserve time for the guided tour.
- Combine your visit with a short stop at Hohenwerfen Castle (near Werfen) on the same day; many visitors to the ice cave miss the castle, which is a brief drive away and provides a contrasting historical experience.
Best Time to Visit Eisriesenwelt #
Tour in late spring to early autumn when guided visits and transport are running; expect freezing conditions inside the cave.
