Eibsee is an alpine lake in Bavaria at the foot of the Zugspitze massif, in the municipality of Grainau near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is a popular natural landmark for its clear water, island-dotted shoreline and views of the surrounding limestone and granite peaks.
The lake offers a roughly circular walking route around the shore and facilities for boating and swimming in warmer months. The setting is compact and mountainous, with several small islands and shallow bays around the perimeter.
Eibsee formed in glacial terrain and sits at an elevation of around 970 to 1,000 metres above sea level. The lake is located within a short drive of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and adjacent to the Zugspitze cable car access area.
The lake is in a high-alpine valley in southern Bavaria, about a 10-minute drive from the base station for the Zugspitze and roughly 10 kilometres west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The surroundings are steep forested slopes and alpine rock.
- Location advantage: Sits at the foot of the Zugspitze massif, making it a common starting point for trips up Germany's highest mountain and for the Zugspitze cable car.
- Recreation: The lake's water is noted for clarity and a range of green-blue colours; boat rentals and a circular walking path allow close views of the shoreline and surrounding peaks.
