Éfaté (Efate) is a central island of Vanuatu in Shefa Province and contains Port Vila, the country’s capital and main commercial centre. The island is the most densely populated and developed island in Vanuatu.
Port Vila provides most visitor services, accommodation and transport links, alongside markets, restaurants and harbour facilities used for boat trips to nearby islets and reefs. Natural attractions on Efate include coastal beaches, reef snorkeling, and short inland walks to waterfalls and viewpoints popular with day visitors.

How to Get to Éfaté Island #
Éfaté (Efate) is the island that contains Vanuatu’s capital Port Vila and Bauerfield International Airport (VLI). The standard way to reach Éfaté is by air into Bauerfield (Port Vila); from the airport it is a short taxi transfer into central Port Vila (a few kilometres, typically 10-15 minutes). Passenger ferries also operate between some of Vanuatu’s islands and Port Vila.
Tips for Visiting Éfaté Island #
- Base yourself in Port Vila on Éfaté for easiest access to services, markets and island excursions; most day trips (snorkeling, villages, waterfalls) depart from Port Vila's wharves in the morning.
- Book a short boat trip to Hideaway Island for snorkeling and to see the famous underwater post office, and visit Mele Cascades on a separate land trip-both are common local outings that give very different views of the island.
