Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna

The Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna are a group of late Roman and early Byzantine buildings in the city of Ravenna, celebrated for their well-preserved mosaic decoration and architectural innovation. The ensemble was inscribed as a World Heritage Site for its outstanding early Christian art dating mainly to the 5th and 6th centuries.

Principal attractions include the centrally planned Basilica of San Vitale, the richly decorated Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the basilicas of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo and Sant’Apollinare in Classe, and several early baptisteries and chapels; the mosaics depict imperial figures, saints and biblical narratives with striking colour and detail. The buildings illustrate the transition from Western Roman to Byzantine artistic and liturgical traditions and are key references for early Christian iconography.

These monuments were built and decorated under Ostrogothic and Byzantine rule in the 5th and 6th centuries and have been preserved within the city fabric, allowing close study of early Christian ecclesiastical architecture and mosaic technique.
