Durmitor National Park
Nature Reserve Montenegrin national park with glacial lakes and peaks
Durmitor National Park offers glacial peaks, the dark-surfaced Black Lake, lupine meadows and the Tara River canyon; hikers, skiers and rafters come for marked trails, alpine huts and dramatic highland scenery.
Durmitor National Park is a mountainous national park in northwestern Montenegro and a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1980. It contains high limestone peaks, glacial lakes and deep river canyons characteristic of the Dinaric Alps.
Visitors come for alpine hiking and climbing on peaks such as Bobotov Kuk (2,523 metres), for scenic glacial lakes including multiple ‘mountain eyes’ such as Crno Jezero (Black Lake), and for rafting and canyon tourism in the nearby Tara River Canyon, one of Europe’s deepest river canyons. The park offers a network of marked trails, mountain huts and viewpoints across high plateaus and ridges.
The area’s landscapes were shaped by Pleistocene glaciation and river erosion; it has been managed for conservation and recreation since the mid-20th century and was recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding natural features.
Durmitor occupies a compact mountainous area in Montenegro’s northwest around the town of Žabljak, which serves as the main gateway for trailheads, visitor services and accommodation.
- Best seasons: The park is best visited in summer for hiking and in winter for skiing around Žabljak's Savin Kuk area; weather can change quickly in alpine zones.
- Trail advice: Several glacial lakes and high plateaus require proper footwear and navigation - trails are marked but exposed in places, so allow extra time for ascents.
What to See #
- Bobotov Kuk: Bobotov Kuk is the park's highest peak at 2,523 metres and is a primary objective for hikers and mountaineers visiting the massif.
- Black Lake (Crno Jezero): Crno Jezero (Black Lake) is one of the best-known glacial lakes in the park, set beneath steep slopes and served by marked walking paths near Žabljak.
- Tara River Canyon: The Tara River Canyon cuts along the park's northern edge and is one of Europe's deepest river canyons, offering rafting and canyon scenery.
How to Get to Durmitor National Park #
Žabljak is about 170 km from Podgorica (3-3.5 hours by road). Buses run from Podgorica and from Nikšić; many visitors drive via the scenic P5/P13 roads. From Žabljak town center the Black Lake is a 3-4 km, mostly level walk or a short local bus/taxi ride.
Tips for Visiting Durmitor National Park #
- Do the Black Lake (Crno Jezero) loop early to avoid bus groups and to see the water like glass at sunrise.
- If hiking to Bobotov Kuk, start very early-the 2,523 m summit can involve snow even in June and weather changes rapidly.
- Hire a local guide for multi-day traverses; trails are often unmarked above treeline and weather can hide cairns.
Best Time to Visit Durmitor National Park #
Best visited late spring through early autumn for hiking; winter suits experienced alpine visitors.
