Durmitor
Mountain Montenegrin mountain massif and national park with canyons
Durmitor National Park in Montenegro offers glacial lakes like Crno Jezero, karst plateaus and peaks such as Bobotov Kuk; tourists hike, ski in winter and raft the Tara River canyon.
Durmitor is a mountain massif and national park in northwestern Montenegro within the Dinaric Alps, centred around the town of Žabljak. The protected area is known for rugged peaks, glacial lakes and deep river canyons.
Outdoor activities include hiking, climbing, and white-water rafting on the Tara River, together with sightseeing of glacial lakes such as Black Lake. The massif’s highest summit, Bobotov Kuk, is a principal mountaineering objective in the park.
Durmitor was established as a national park to protect its karst topography, biodiversity and dramatic glacial features and later gained international recognition for its natural values. The park supports a range of alpine flora and fauna and seasonal tourism infrastructure in Žabljak.
The massif lies in northern Montenegro, roughly 160 kilometres north of the capital Podgorica and close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Žabljak serving as the main access town.
- Protection status: Designated a national park and later recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its karst landscapes and glacial landforms.
- Tara River Canyon: Contains the Tara River Canyon, which is among the deepest river canyons in Europe and a popular location for rafting and canyon-side viewpoints.
What to See #
- Bobotov Kuk: The summit Bobotov Kuk reaches 2,523 metres and is the highest point of the Durmitor massif, offering panoramic views across the Dinaric Alps.
- Black Lake (Crno Jezero): Crno Jezero, or Black Lake, is a glacial lake near the town of Žabljak and is a popular starting point for local walks and viewpoints around the park.
How to Get to Durmitor #
Durmitor National Park is accessed from the town of Žabljak, which is the usual base for visiting the massif. Žabljak has regular bus connections from Podgorica and other Montenegrin towns; by car it is roughly a 2.5-4 hour drive from Podgorica depending on route and conditions (approximately 150-200 km). From Žabljak the park and individual peaks are reached by local roads and marked trails.
Tips for Visiting Durmitor #
- Use Žabljak as your base for Durmitor National Park - most trailheads, Black Lake (Crno Jezero) and visitor information are accessed from this town and it has the closest services.
- Start hikes early in the day to avoid afternoon thunderstorms common in the mountains, and plan longer routes (for example Bobotov Kuk) as full-day walks or multi-day treks with local maps and weather checks.
- Don't skip viewpoints along the Tara River canyon and Đurđevića Tara Bridge on the park's periphery - many visitors focus on the central massif but the canyon viewpoints and bridge offer dramatic panoramas and are easily combined into a day trip from Žabljak.
Best Time to Visit Durmitor #
Best visited in summer (June-September) for hiking and full access to mountain trails; winter offers snow sports for experienced visitors.
