Dune of Pilat
Nature Reserve Europe's tallest sand dune overlooking Atlantic Ocean
On Arcachon Bay, the Dune of Pilat is Europe’s largest sand dune; visitors climb its steep slope for panoramic coastal views, beach access, paragliding and nearby pine-forest walks outside Bordeaux.
The Dune of Pilat is a large coastal sand dune on the Atlantic coast of southwestern France near Arcachon. It is the tallest sand dune in Europe and a prominent natural landmark in the area.
A broad sand crest runs for around 2.7 kilometres along the shore with a width of several hundred metres; visitors commonly climb to the dune summit for panoramic views over Arcachon Bay and the adjacent pine forest. Activities focus on walking the dune, photography and paragliding from the ridge on suitable days.
The dune is a dynamic natural feature formed by wind-driven sand accumulation along the Landes coast; its size and position have varied over historic times and it continues to shift slowly inland. Local management seeks to balance visitor access with dune conservation.
Located at the entrance to Arcachon Bay in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the dune sits a short drive west of the town of La Teste-de-Buch and about 60 kilometres southwest of Bordeaux.
- Height: Forms the tallest sand dune in Europe, with a summit height that varies but is approximately 110 metres above sea level in many measurements.
- Access and views: Accessible by stairways and viewpoints at the edges; the dune fronts Arcachon Bay and offers views across the bay and the Landes forest on clear days.

Tips for Visiting Dune of Pilat #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the busiest hours and get better light for photographs of the dune and the Bay of Arcachon; parking fills quickly during summer weekends.
- Use the main parking and the marked wooden access paths/stairways from the parking area rather than approaching from the beach to protect the fragile dune vegetation and to save a long walk through loose sand.
- Climb to the dune's seaward ridge for the best views across the bay-many people stay at the base or only walk a short way up and miss the panoramic outlook at the top.
