Dümmer

Dümmer is a shallow lake in Lower Saxony, Germany, in the Diepholz district and a focal point for regional nature conservation. The lake covers roughly 13.5 square kilometres and lies within a landscape of reedbeds and moors.

The shoreline and sheltered shallows make the area important for waterbirds and migrants, with hides and observation towers at places such as Lembruch and Hüde. The lake is also used for sailing, windsurfing and recreational boating and has facilities for visitors in the lakeside villages.

The basin is a post-glacial lake that has been used for fishing and reed-harvesting for centuries; in the 20th century the lakeshore and surrounding moorland were progressively protected and managed for wildlife. Conservation management today focuses on reedbeds and wetland bird habitats alongside recreational use.

The lake sits in the Diepholz district between small towns and villages of the Dümmer region; villages such as Lembruch and Hüde lie on its shores and provide the main visitor access points.

• Bird observatory: At Lembruch there is a long-established bird observatory with hides and towers used for viewing migrants and breeding waterfowl.
• Windsurfing and sailing: The lake is shallow and favours windsurfing, sailing and small-boat recreation; summer and windy days are best for watersports.
