Długi Targ
Plaza Gdańsk's main Long Market featuring Neptune Fountain
Gdańsk’s Długi Targ (Long Market) runs from the Golden Gate to the Neptune Fountain; tourists come for Hanseatic townhouses, amber shops, outdoor cafés and the route to the Main Town Hall.
Długi Targ is the principal historic thoroughfare and public square in Gdańsk’s Main City, northern Poland, forming the ceremonial Royal Route through the old port quarter.
The street is lined with richly decorated merchant houses, public buildings and museums, with the central Neptune Fountain and the adjacent Artus Court forming its focal points. Many buildings date back to the medieval and early-modern periods and now contain museums, shops and restaurants.
A short walk along the stretch leads to the riverfront and the Green Gate, creating a compact sequence of architectural highlights that concentrates the city’s civic and mercantile history in one pedestrian area.
Długi Targ developed during the medieval Hanseatic period as Gdańsk’s main market and ceremonial avenue and was repeatedly rebuilt after fires and wartime damage. Its current streetscape reflects centuries of reconstruction and 20th-century restoration work following extensive destruction in World War II.
Sitting in Gdańsk’s Main City, the thoroughfare runs east-west toward the Motława river and the city harbour; it is in the historic centre of Gdańsk and within easy walking distance of the railway station and the riverfront.
- Compact route: Highly concentrated sequence of landmarks and museums along a single pedestrianized stretch, making it practical to see the main historical sights within 1-2 hours on foot.
- Best time to visit: Early morning or late evening visits reduce crowds and give better light for photographing façades and the Neptune Fountain without heavy tourist traffic.
