Dugi Otok is a long, narrow island in Zadar County on Croatia’s Adriatic coast, known for its rugged coastline, cliffs and sheltered bays. The name means “Long Island” and the island’s shape and length define its landscape and settlement pattern.
Notable attractions include the protected Telašćica Nature Park at the southern tip, featuring dramatic cliffs, sheltered coves and the saltwater lake Mir, and several well-known beaches such as Sakarun that attract day visitors and boaters. Small villages and sparse development preserve much of the island’s natural character.
Historically the island has had a pattern of small-scale fishing, farming and maritime activity; tourism has grown in recent decades but remains concentrated in a few areas and in summer months. Conservation measures protect key natural features and marine areas.

Tips for Visiting Dugi Otok #
- Take one of the earliest ferries from Zadar and head straight to Telašćica Nature Park or Sakarun beach-both fill up by late morning in summer, so arriving with the first crossings helps avoid crowds.
- Plan routes around the island using Sali as a base (most rentals and services are there) and rent a scooter or car in advance in high season; many coves and viewpoints are reached by narrow roads where parking is limited.
- Give yourself time for smaller, less-visited spots such as the cliffs and salt lake inside Telašćica rather than only visiting the famous beaches-these quieter areas reward a short hike or boat trip.
