Ducal Palace, Mantua

The Ducal Palace in Mantua is an extensive palace complex that served as the residential and governmental centre of the Gonzaga family for several centuries. It combines multiple buildings, courtyards and richly decorated rooms built and adapted from the 14th century onward.

Among the palace’s principal attractions is the Camera degli Sposi, a painted private chamber by Andrea Mantegna renowned for its illusionistic frescoes. The complex contains ceremonial halls, private apartments, courtyards and chapels that together illustrate Gonzaga patronage of the arts and Renaissance court life.

Large parts of the palace are presented as a museum, allowing visitors to move through successive rooms and courtyards that reflect different building phases and decorative programs.
