Religious Site Baroque cathedral in Dubrovnik housing religious artworks
Baroque cathedral in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, notable for its vaulted dome, cathedral treasury and art collection; visitors combine a trip here with walking the city walls and exploring nearby museums and churches.
Dubrovnik Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is the principal Roman Catholic church of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and a prominent Baroque building in the city. The present cathedral dates from the post-earthquake reconstruction that followed the 1667 seismic event.
The interior contains the main nave, choir and side chapels typical of a late 17th-century Baroque cathedral, and the adjoining treasury holds many historic ecclesiastical objects and reliquaries. The cathedral functions as an active parish church and is part of Dubrovnik’s ensemble of historic monuments.
The cathedral’s predecessor buildings dated back many centuries, but the 1667 earthquake prompted the comprehensive rebuilding that produced the current Baroque appearance. Subsequent conservation has preserved the building as a central element of the Old Town.
The cathedral stands within Dubrovnik’s walled Old Town on the Adriatic coast, immediately adjacent to the city’s main square and near other principal landmarks such as the bell tower and Rector’s Palace.

How to Get to Dubrovnik Cathedral #
Dubrovnik Cathedral sits in the heart of Dubrovnik Old Town (off the Stradun). From Dubrovnik’s Gruž bus station (autobusni kolodvor) you can take a local city bus toward the Old Town or a short taxi ride; the main pedestrian entrance, Pile Gate, is about a 5-10 minute walk along the Stradun to the cathedral. If arriving by air, Dubrovnik Airport (Čilipi) is roughly 20 km from the Old Town - expect a 25-40 minute drive via the D8/E65 coastal road depending on traffic; parking is limited inside the city walls so park outside and walk in.
Tips for Visiting Dubrovnik Cathedral #
- Visit very early in the morning or late afternoon-this is when Dubrovnik's Old Town is quietest and before/after most cruise-ship crowds arrive, making access to the cathedral interior far easier.
- Check the cathedral's service/Mass times before you go; it is an active parish and parts of the interior may be closed to visitors during worship.
- Plan your cathedral visit as part of a single Old Town circuit (walls, Rector's Palace, bell tower) so you don't need to re-enter the walled area during peak crowd periods.
Best Time to Visit Dubrovnik Cathedral #
Go in late spring or early autumn to enjoy mild weather and avoid the heaviest summer tourist crowds.
