Dreros
Archaeological Site Ancient Cretan archaeological site and early Dorian settlement
An archaeological site on Crete, Dreros preserves remains of an ancient town and early Greek inscriptions; visitors survey excavated walls, temples and the rural landscape.
Dreros is an archaeological site on the island of Crete that preserves remains of an ancient settlement and civic centre from the Archaic and Classical periods. It is noted for surviving architectural ruins and inscribed stone fragments.
Excavated remains include foundations of public buildings and sanctuaries, street layouts and stone inscriptions that illuminate local administration and cult practice. The site is of interest to visitors for its tangible examples of early Greek urban organisation and material culture.
The settlement developed in the first millennium BCE and was part of Crete’s network of city-states. Archaeological work over the 20th century revealed public structures and inscriptions that helped date phases of occupation and local institutions.
Dreros is located on central-northern Crete, inland from the northern coast of the island. It occupies a rural landscape of low hills and agricultural land within the administrative region of Crete.
- Archaeological remains: Contains visible remains of an Archaic-period community including foundations, walls and inscriptions that illustrate early Cretan civic life.
