Drakonera
Island Small Ionian island off Lefkada's coast
Drakonera, among the Ionian isles, is a low island visited mainly by sailors for sheltered coves, rocky beaches and short coastal walks from nearby ports.
Drakonera is a small island in the Ionian Islands region of western Greece, part of the Echinades/Drakonera group of islets. It is one of several low-lying, largely rocky islands that lie off the mainland Aetolia-Acarnania coast.
The island offers natural, rocky coastline and sheltered anchorages used by private boats and local skippers. There are no developed tourist facilities and visits are typically brief stops by boat for scenery, swimming or birdwatching.
Like many small Ionian islets, Drakonera has no major recorded continuous settlement and has been used intermittently for grazing, sheltering boats and seasonal uses rather than permanent habitation. It has remained largely unchanged in character as a small, natural island.
Drakonera lies in the Ionian Sea off western Greece within the archipelago of Echinades islets, positioned near the Aetolia-Acarnania coastline and accessible only by private boat.
- Access and services: No regular services or facilities; access is by private boat and is typical for small Ionian islets that are sparsely inhabited or uninhabited.
How to Get to Drakonera #
Drakonera is reached by private boat or local charter from larger Ionian islands such as Lefkada or Ithaca. There are no regular ferry services; boat trips depart from regional harbors. Hiring a licensed skipper in summer is the usual way to visit safely.
Tips for Visiting Drakonera #
- Approach by small boat from nearby islands or the mainland; the islet has limited landing spots so calm weather helps.
- Bring snorkeling gear-clear waters around Ionian islets often reveal octopus and colorful reef fish.
- Check local charts and ask fishermen about tidal currents; the Ionian can be deceptively strong between islands.
Best Time to Visit Drakonera #
Best visited in summer for swimming and boat access; shoulder seasons offer quieter conditions but some services may be reduced.
