Sa Dragonera is a small uninhabited islet off the west coast of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, designated as a natural park. The island is characterized by rocky coastline, scrub vegetation and cliffs that rise directly from the sea.
Trails on the islet lead to viewpoints and former watchposts, and the surrounding waters form a marine reserve popular with boaters and snorkelers. Visitors typically arrive on short boat trips from Mallorca and spend a few hours walking the island’s paths and viewing the shoreline.
Historically the islet has been used for maritime observation and lightkeeping; it has no permanent population and is protected for its natural and coastal habitats. Management as a natural park focuses on conservation of flora, seabirds and marine life.
Sa Dragonera lies off Mallorca’s southwest shore opposite the village of Sant Elm and is part of the Balearic archipelago.
- Natural park status: Declared a natural park and marine reserve, the islet is uninhabited and valued for its coastal cliffs, seabird colonies and Mediterranean scrubland.
- Boat access and hiking trails: Most visits are day trips by boat from the nearby Mallorca coast, commonly from the village of Sant Elm, with marked walking trails for visitors.
How to Get to Dragonera #
Sa Dragonera is an uninhabited islet off Mallorca’s west coast. To reach it, travel to the coastal village/harbour of Sant Elm (near Andratx) by car or bus from Palma; from Palma the drive is about 40-45 km west. Regular boat excursions and small ferries depart Sant Elm for Sa Dragonera (short crossing); once in Sant Elm the landing point is a short walk from the village quay - check local boat operators for timetables and landing spots.
Tips for Visiting Dragonera #
- Take the regular passenger ferry from Sant Elm first thing in the morning to beat afternoon day‑trippers and the peak sun; the ferry lands at the designated visitor jetty so you can start the main coastal loop without scrambling for shore access.
- Stick to the marked trails to reach the western viewpoints and the old lighthouse - these viewpoints are the best places for sea and coastline perspective and are often overlooked by people who only stop briefly after landing.
