Main image

Douro International Natural Park is a protected area in northeastern Portugal that safeguards the steep gorge of the Douro River where it forms the international border with Spain. The park preserves a rugged river landscape of cliffs, rocky slopes and riparian habitats that support diverse wildlife.

Key attractions are the deep river gorge, cliffs used by nesting raptors and a network of small roads and viewpoints along the Portuguese bank that offer panoramic views over the river and across into Spain. Birdwatching and scenic drives are common visitor activities, and the area is relatively remote compared with Portugal’s coastal parks.

The park was created by the Portuguese state in the late 20th century to conserve the Douro’s border canyon landscape and its biodiversity, including important bird colonies. Management focuses on habitat protection, low-impact tourism and cross-border ecological conservation.

The park lies in Bragança District in northeastern Portugal along the Douro River; towns such as Miranda do Douro are among the nearest settlements on the Portuguese side and the park follows the river valley along the frontier with Spain.

  • Raptor colonies: The park protects steep river canyons and cliffs that are important for raptors such as griffon vultures and other bird species.
  • Visitor access: Access is generally by road; nearby towns such as Miranda do Douro serve as common bases for visitors to viewpoints and trails.
