Dorestad

Dorestad was an important early medieval trading emporium located at the Rhine-Lek river junction in what is now the province of Utrecht. It was a major centre for riverine trade in the seventh through ninth centuries and is known from archaeological finds rather than a continuous urban occupation.

Excavations have revealed docks, workshops and imported goods that attest to extensive long-distance trade and craft production during its peak. The site is mainly of archaeological interest today, with visible remains and museum displays reconstructing its role in early medieval commerce.

The settlement developed under Frankish influence in the later 600s and remained significant through the 800s. Repeated Viking raids and political shifts in the ninth century led to its decline and the eventual relocation of trade to other ports.

The archaeological area lies near the modern town of Wijk bij Duurstede in the central Netherlands, at the historic confluence of Rhine distributaries, within the low-lying river landscape of Utrecht province.
