Donegal Castle

Donegal Castle is a stone castle located on the banks of the River Eske in Donegal Town, County Donegal. Its core is a 15th-century tower house associated with the local ruling O’Donnell dynasty.

Visitors typically see the restored tower house and surviving curtain walls, with interior rooms showing masonry and period-style fittings. The castle occupies a compact footprint beside the river and is one of the principal historic monuments in Donegal Town.

The original stronghold was constructed by the O’Donnell clan in the 15th century; the site saw later alterations and repairs in the early 17th century when English forces and settlers made modifications. The castle has since been conserved and opened for public access.

Donegal Castle sits in the centre of Donegal Town, at the head of Donegal Bay in northwest Ireland. It is close to town streets, parking and riverside promenades, making it accessible on foot from the town centre.
