Domus Tiberiana

The Domus Tiberiana is the ruined imperial palace on the northwest side of the Palatine Hill in Rome, originally built for Emperor Tiberius in the early 1st century AD. It forms part of the larger Palatine archaeological area and museum complex.

Constructed for Emperor Tiberius and used by subsequent emperors, the complex was enlarged and altered over the imperial period; later structures and excavations exposed layered phases of occupation. Over centuries it fell into ruin and has been the subject of archaeological investigation and partial conservation within the Palatine archaeological park.

Sited on the northwest slope of the Palatine Hill in central Rome, the Domus Tiberiana overlooks the Roman Forum and sits adjacent to other imperial residences and museums within the archaeological area.

• Access and ticketing: Best visited as part of the Palatine archaeological area; combine with the Roman Forum and Colosseum ticket to see the site in context.
• Viewing point: Terraces provide clear views across the Forum valley and toward the Circus Maximus, which are best in the morning or late afternoon light.

What to See #

• Palatine terraces: Remains of extensive terraces and massive retaining walls that formed the visible upper platform of the palace on the northwest slope of the Palatine Hill, offering views over the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus.
• Substructures and cryptoporticus: Substructures and cryptoporticus consisting of vaulted rooms and corridors beneath the palace level, where archaeological excavations have exposed foundations and service spaces from the imperial complex.
