Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park

Domogled-Valea Cernei National Park is a protected area in southwestern Romania in Caraș-Severin County that conserves mountainous terrain of the Cerna Valley and adjacent massifs. It is one of Romania’s larger national parks and protects a mix of karst landscapes and old-growth forests.

The park offers deep gorges, cave systems, river valleys and alpine meadows; notable terrain changes occur over short distances and many marked trails lead to cliff viewpoints and cascades. Key visitor routes follow the Cerna River corridor and access points are concentrated around spa towns and valley roads.

Protection of the area has focused on conserving native forest stands and karst features; the landscape has been managed to allow traditional pastoral use in some high pastures while limiting development along sensitive valley slopes. Over time parts of the area have been designated under national protection frameworks and mapped for biodiversity conservation.

The park sits in the Southern Carpathians along the Cerna Valley. It is reachable from regional towns in Caraș-Severin County and lies along routes linking inland western Romania with the Danube corridor and passes toward the Banat hills.

• Access and hiking: Sections are best accessed from the Cerna Valley; some trails and viewpoints are steep and remote so allow several hours for hikes.
• Best time to visit: The park contains karst caves and gorges that are most scenic in spring when water levels are higher.
